 FIREDANCE

The Firedance is a well-guarded secret of the natives of Alfonso, Cavite, and 70 km. South of Manila. Legend has it that the river, which the natives called "Big Water", brought life and prosperity to the community. In thanksgiving, they initiated a ritual of dancing on live coals to honor the river gods. Concelebrated with this thanksgiving ritual is an offering to the land goddesses for a bountiful harvest. A "King" or "Queen" leads the prayers and offerings to the Sto. Nino or Christ Child as a prelude to the finale when they step and dance on lives coals in culmination of the ritual. Through this ritual, the townsfolk are reminded that God is powerful and shares His power and with man for one brief, mysterious moment when man is able to overcome fire. This ritual is one of the unique experiences to be encountered in the Philippines and can surely 'fire up' any party.
