 SAMPAGUITA

The national flower of the Philippines is a small blossom with velvety, white petals. Its heavenly fragrance wafting through a moonlit night provides a romantic setting for lovers. Strung into garlands or fashioned into crowns, the sampaguita is the perfect offering to welcome and honor guests. With its beauty and scent, the sampaguita takes center stage in the Santacruzan (Procession of the Cross) and Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May summer festivities. In the Santacruzan, the sampaguita adorns the arcs of parade participants who enact the roles of various saints in search of the lost crucifix. In the Flores de Mayo, children offer flowers to the Virgin Mary; among them, the dainty, lovely sampaguita.
