AN OVERVIEW
Association management is a serious profession. And therefore,
it requires no less than professionals.
As stated by the American
Society of Association Executives (ASAE), the leading professional
society of 12,000 trade associations based in the United States
---
"Associations are an enormous and diverse force for social
and economic
benefits in serving the public good through voluntary action
and
consensus-building activities. They set and enforce standards,
conduct
technical research, establish ethics, provide continuing education
and
cultivate and promote the arts, education and community service."
In the Philippines, there are more than 60,000 associations
registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Only
4% are classified as professional. The bigger bulk are trade,
civic and philanthropic organizations. Out of the 2,382 professional
associations, less than 10% of these associations are managed
by professional executives. Majority are still managed by volunteer
executives who spend only 10% of their time in running the day-to-day
operations of their associations.
In the Philippines therefore, professional association management
remains a continuing challenge.
